Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy With Sheryl Ford
FAQS
Fees & Policies
Choosing a therapist involves more than finding an open appointment. You may want to understand how payment works, what privacy looks like, whether the practice is a fit for your needs, and what to expect before reaching out.
Here are answers to common questions about individual therapy, couples therapy, EMDR, and Therapy Intensives.
-
Yes. This is a private-pay practice, which means payment is due directly from you rather than through insurance billing.
Choosing private-pay therapy gives you greater control over your personal health information. When you self-pay and do not request insurance reimbursement, I do not submit therapy claims, diagnoses, treatment plans, or session details to commercial insurance companies, employer-sponsored health plans, or government health plans for payment.
This can be especially important for clients who value discretion and prefer to keep deeply personal mental-health information out of insurance systems whenever possible.
Private pay does not eliminate every circumstance in which information may need to be disclosed, such as when you authorize coordination of care or when disclosure is required by law. Those circumstances are explained in the Notice of Privacy Practices.
-
Insurance can be helpful for some people, but it often requires a mental-health diagnosis, treatment documentation, and ongoing review of services in order to determine coverage or reimbursement.
Private-pay therapy allows us to focus on your goals, needs, and treatment pace without requiring insurance authorization or insurer involvement in clinical decision-making. It can also provide more flexibility around session length, specialized services, EMDR, couples therapy, and Accelerated Therapy Intensives.
The goal is not to create pressure around payment. It is to offer a more private, personalized, and clinically focused therapy experience.

A superbill may be available upon request for eligible outpatient therapy services.
You are responsible for contacting your insurance provider to determine whether you have out-of-network benefits, whether your plan will reimburse services, what documentation is required, and what portion of the fee may be covered. I cannot guarantee that your insurance company will accept a superbill or provide reimbursement.
Please note: requesting and submitting a superbill requires the sharing of PHI with your insurance company, a benefit of private-pay therapy that many clients desire to protect.EMDR Therapy Intensives are not structured for out-of-network insurance reimbursement because they are delivered in an extended, customized format.
-
Upon request, I can provide receipts or year-end documentation for services you have paid for.
I cannot guarantee that therapy expenses will qualify as deductible medical expenses, be eligible for reimbursement, or create a specific tax benefit. Tax rules vary based on your individual circumstances. Please consult a qualified CPA or tax professional for guidance about your personal situation.
